Amorphous Alloy Transformer SBH15-M: A 75% Energy-Saving Breakthrough

Introduction

Under the global "Dual Carbon" goals and the ongoing drive to improve power-system efficiency, the Amorphous Alloy Transformer has become a benchmark for loss reduction in distribution networks thanks to its revolutionary core material. The SBH15-M series adopts an amorphous alloy core and cuts the no-load loss by approximately 75% compared with a conventional S9 silicon-steel transformer — widely regarded as the "75% energy-saving breakthrough."

XIAOPAI Electric manufactures the SBH15-M fully-sealed amorphous alloy distribution transformer in capacities from 30 to 2500 kVA. Certified to ISO 9001 and CE, it is widely used in urban grids, residential communities, renewable-energy projects and government energy-saving retrofits, significantly lowering owners' lifetime electricity cost.

SBH15-M Amorphous Alloy Transformer — Structure

Technical Principle

Amorphous Alloy Material

An Amorphous Alloy is a metallic glass produced by Rapid Quenching — molten metal is cooled at a rate of about 1,000,000 °C per second — resulting in a long-range disordered atomic structure. With no grain boundaries, its coercivity is extremely low and its hysteresis loss is only a fraction of that of conventional grain-oriented silicon steel.

At the same time, the amorphous alloy features high resistivity, which effectively suppresses eddy-current loss. These two properties make the amorphous core a naturally low-loss magnetic circuit.

Ribbon-Wound Core

The amorphous alloy is supplied as an ultra-thin ribbon of 0.02–0.03 mm. The core is formed by ribbon winding into a rectangular or toroidal wound core, annealed to relieve stress. Compared with the laminated 45° step-lap joint of conventional silicon steel, the wound core offers a continuous, gapless magnetic path and superior no-load performance.

Loss Mechanism

Transformer losses split into no-load loss (iron loss, load-independent) and load loss (copper loss, load-dependent). Amorphous alloy primarily reduces no-load loss — and because distribution transformers stay connected year-round at low loading, no-load loss can account for 50%–70% of total loss, making amorphous alloy especially valuable for grid energy saving.

Product Features

~75% Energy Saving

SeriesNo-load loss (vs S9)Characteristic
S9 (baseline)100%Conventional standard
S11~65%30–40% lower
S13~50%45–55% lower
SBH15-M (amorphous)~25%~75% lower

Low Noise

The amorphous core has uniform magnetostriction; combined with a fully-sealed tank and vibration damping, operating noise is a further 3–5 dB(A) lower than an equivalent S11 unit — ideal around residences, schools and hospitals.

Eco-Friendly

The material is 100% recyclable with no hazardous emissions in production or use. The fully-sealed, maintenance-free design isolates the insulating oil from air, slowing ageing and extending service life.

Reliable Protection

Standard: gas relay (Buchholz), pressure release valve, oil-level gauge, silica-gel breather, winding-temperature indicator. Optional BWDK intelligent temperature controller with RS485 / SCADA interface.

Application Scenarios

Urban Grid & Residential

Distribution transformers often run idle or lightly loaded, maximizing the amorphous saving. SBH15-M is widely used in residential compact substations and street distribution rooms — cutting both bills and noise.

Renewables & Distributed Generation

In PV-poverty-alleviation and distributed wind projects, the low no-load loss of amorphous transformers fits the "small capacity, long idle time" duty cycle.

Government Retrofit & Subsidy Programs

Many utilities list amorphous transformers in energy-saving subsidy catalogs; procuring SBH15-M captures policy benefits and a faster payback.

Selection Guide

  1. Capacity: actual load x coincidence factor (0.7–0.85), plus 10%–15% growth margin

  2. Priority: stable grid, long light-load, high tariff or subsidy available -> prefer SBH15-M

  3. Vs S13: SBH15-M costs ~20%–30% more initially, but lower no-load loss pays back in typically 3–6 years

  4. Voltage: 10/0.4 kV standard; 20/0.4 kV and 35/0.4 kV available on request

  5. Environment: standard outdoor / C5-M anti-corrosion (coastal), high-altitude reinforced on request

Conclusion

The SBH15-M amorphous alloy transformer redefines the energy-saving ceiling of distribution transformers with a ~75% reduction in no-load loss. As efficiency standards tighten and electricity and carbon costs rise, it is moving from "premium option" to "mainstream standard."

XIAOPAI Electric supplies the full SBH15-M range from 30 to 2500 kVA, with fully-sealed, anti-corrosion, high-altitude and special-voltage customization, all passing routine and type tests.
