A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is a medium-voltage switch that interrupts faultcurrent inside a vacuum interrupter instead of oil or gas. 1. The core component: vacuum interrupter

The vacuum interrupter is a sealed ceramic envelope holding two contacts in ahigh-vacuum environment (pressure below 10⁻⁴ Pa). This envelope:

  • Prevents re-ignition after current zero (vacuum recovers dielectric strength almost instantly)

  • Needs no gas refilling or oil replacement

  • Keeps the switching chamber compact and maintenance-light

2. What happens during a fault (step by step)

  1. Detection – protection relays sense overcurrent and send a trip signal.

  1. Contact separation – the operating mechanism pulls the moving contact apart.

  1. Arc initiation – current jumps the gap as metal vapor plasma (the "arc").

  1. Arc quenching – at the natural AC current zero, the plasma condenses on thecontacts and the vacuum immediately regains insulation. The arc is extinguished.

  1. Dielectric recovery – the gap holds off the system voltage; the fault is cleared.
