Introduction
In the previous article, Transformer Overview, we outlined the basic classification of transformers — among them, the oil-immersed transformer stands out as the undisputed workhorse of distribution networks and industrial applications, thanks to its large capacity, low cost, and excellent heat dissipation.
Within the oil-immersed family, the S11-M hermetically sealed oil-immersed distribution transformer is one of the most widely used and cost-effective models. From the pad-mounted substations in residential neighborhoods to the power rooms of industrial parks and the supply points of remote oil fields, its presence is almost everywhere.
As one of the core product lines of XIAOPAI Electric, the S11-M series combines mature engineering design with significant energy-saving advantages. This article takes a deep dive into its structural features, technical parameters, application scenarios, and energy efficiency, helping you make informed decisions when selecting a model.
I. What Is the S11-M? Decoding the Model Designation
Understand the model code, and you understand the product:
Code | Meaning |
S | Three-Phase |
11 | Performance level code (design sequence; the higher the number, the lower the losses and the better the performance) |
M | Hermetically Sealed structure (corrugated tank, no oil conservator) |
In other words, S11-M is a "three-phase, 11th-generation performance level, hermetically sealed" oil-immersed distribution transformer. It replaced older models such as S7 and S9, and is a mainstay of China's promoted high-efficiency, energy-saving distribution transformer range.
II. Core Structural Features
The defining hallmark of the S11-M is its hermetically sealed design. Its biggest difference from conventional oil-immersed transformers is the elimination of the traditional oil conservator (oil pillow), replaced by a corrugated tank wall (Corrugated Tank) that accommodates the thermal expansion and contraction of the transformer oil.
1. Corrugated Tank Heat-Dissipation Structure
The tank body is welded from corrugated steel plates, serving as both container and radiator. As the oil temperature rises, the corrugated fins expand outward to absorb the volume increase; as it falls, they contract back. This design requires no separate oil conservator and, fundamentally, isolates the oil from contact with air.
Key Value: No conservator = transformer oil never contacts outside air = no moisture absorption, no oxidation, no contamination. The oil's insulating properties remain stable over the long term, greatly extending service life.
2. High-Permeability Iron Core
Uses high-permeability, low-loss grain-oriented silicon steel
Core laminations adopt a 45° fully mitered step-lap joint, significantly reducing magnetic reluctance and no-load losses at the seams
Vacuum annealed to remove processing stress, further lowering iron loss and noise
3. Premium Windings
High-voltage windings are wound with copper conductor in cylindrical/spiral structures with reliable inter-layer insulation
Low-voltage windings use copper foil or copper conductor in concentric arrangement, with strong short-circuit withstand capability
After drying and compression, the windings are assembled as a whole, ensuring high mechanical stability
4. Sealing and Protection Devices
Tank cover and flange are bolted with oil-resistant gaskets for a leak-free hermetic seal
Equipped with a pressure relief valve, which acts instantly to protect the tank against internal overpressure
Equipped with a Buchholz relay interface (on large-capacity units) for internal fault warning
Equipped with winding and oil temperature indicators (WTI/OTI) for real-time monitoring
III. Key Technical Parameters (Typical 10 kV Specifications)

IV. Application Scenarios
Thanks to its hermetically sealed, maintenance-free, and cost-effective nature, the S11-M is suitable for most outdoor and semi-outdoor distribution settings:
1. Urban Distribution Networks and Residential Communities
As the core of neighborhood pad-mounted substations (package substations), it steps 10 kV down to 400 V for residential use. The hermetic design is maintenance-free, ideal for space-limited communities with limited maintenance resources.
2. Industrial Parks and Commercial Complexes
Factories, office buildings, and shopping malls demand high power-supply continuity. The S11-M runs stably with low noise, and can be placed close to the load in a power room to shorten the low-voltage supply radius and reduce line losses.
3. Oil Fields, Mines, and Remote Supply Points
With its conservator-free, hermetically sealed, moisture-proof design, it adapts to harsh environments with sand, humidity, and large temperature swings — a reliable choice for independent power supply in remote areas.
4. Temporary and Mobile Power
For temporary loads such as construction sites, exhibition centers, and agricultural irrigation, the S11-M can be deployed flexibly and put into service immediately, requiring virtually no routine maintenance afterward.
⚠️ Note: The S11-M is oil-immersed and contains flammable mineral oil. For fire-critical spaces with dense occupancy — underground facilities, upper floors of high-rise buildings, hospital cores — dry-type transformers should be prioritized (see Article 06 of this series).
V. Energy-Saving Advantage: How Much Better Than S9?
Energy efficiency is the core reason the S11-M replaces older models. Compared with the earlier S9 series, the S11-M's main loss indicators drop significantly:
Loss Indicator | S11-M vs S9 | Explanation |
No-Load Loss | Reduced by ~25%–30% | Better silicon steel + 45° mitered joints |
Load Loss | Reduced by ~10%–15% | Optimized winding conductor, more compact structure |
No-Load Current | Significantly lower | Superior excitation characteristics, less reactive power |
Taking a commonly used 315 kVA unit as an example:
S9 no-load loss is ~670 W; S11-M no-load loss is ~480 W — a single unit saves about (670−480) × 8760 h ≈ 1,665 kWh of no-load energy per year.
At 0.6 CNY/kWh, that's about 1,000 CNY saved annually per unit. Across a distribution network with hundreds of transformers, the cumulative energy and cost savings are substantial.
Moreover, the hermetic structure keeps the transformer oil clean over the long term, eliminating the maintenance costs of periodic oil filtering, replacement, and topping-up required by conventional oil-immersed transformers — making the whole-life economics even better.
VI. Selection Recommendations
When procuring or designing with the S11-M, consider the following:
Capacity margin: Select 1.2–1.4× the actual maximum load, with an extra 15%–25% expansion margin to avoid chronic overloading.
Connection group: For new residential areas and harmonic-rich environments, Dyn11 is recommended (stronger unbalanced-load and harmonic withstand); Yyn0 suits balanced three-phase loads.
Voltage & taps: Confirm the high-voltage system voltage (10 kV or 20 kV) and the required tap range.
Installation environment: Outdoor use is fine with the hermetic S11-M; if near residential areas, pay attention to noise level (XIAOPAI offers low-noise designs).
Certification & standards: Ensure the product holds ISO 9001, CE, and other certifications, and complies with GB1094, GB/T6451, and IEC standards to meet export and compliance requirements.
XIAOPAI Tip: For projects with higher efficiency requirements (e.g., green buildings, EU exports), upgrade to the S13-M hermetically sealed series (no-load loss ~30%–40% lower than S9, see Article 03) or the amorphous alloy SBH15-M series (no-load loss reduction up to ~75%).
