Transformer Overview: The Core Hub of Power Systems

XIAOPAI Electric · Technical Article | Series Article No. 01 Published: July 2026 | Reading Time: ~8 minutes

Introduction

When you flip a wall switch and the lights come on instantly — behind this simple action, one device is working silently: the transformer.

From the turbines at a power plant to the outlets in every home, electrical energy must pass through multiple voltage increases and decreases before it reaches you safely. Every voltage conversion relies on a transformer. It is an indispensable core device in modern power systems and the cornerstone of global energy infrastructure.

As a high-tech enterprise specializing in transformer R&D and manufacturing, Wenzhou Xiaopai Electric Technology Co., Ltd. (XIAOPAI Electric) will guide you through a systematic understanding of transformer technology, product types, and application scenarios in this article series.

I. What Is a Transformer?

A transformer is a static electrical device that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to change alternating current (AC) voltage. Its core function is to step input voltage up or down to the desired level while maintaining the same frequency.

A transformer consists of three main components:

Component
Function
XIAOPAI Manufacturing Features
Iron Core
Provides a magnetic flux path
High-permeability grain-oriented cold-rolled silicon steel, 45° fully mitered step-lap joints, vacuum annealed for stress relief
Primary Winding
Receives input power and generates magnetic flux
Copper conductor winding, secured with shrink bands
Secondary Winding
Induces output voltage
Concentric winding structure; low-voltage side uses solid copper foil

When AC current flows through the primary winding, an alternating magnetic flux is generated in the iron core. This changing flux passes through the secondary winding and, according to Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction, induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the secondary coil. The voltage ratio between the two windings depends on their turns ratio:

Vs / Vp = Ns / Np

Vs = Secondary voltage, Vp = Primary voltage, Ns = Secondary turns, Np = Primary turns

This simple formula is the theoretical foundation of all transformer design.

II. The Role of Transformers in Power Systems

From production to consumption, electrical power typically passes through six stages: "Generation → Step-Up → Transmission → Step-Down → Distribution → Consumption". Transformers perform three critical conversions along this journey:

1. Step-Up Stage (Generation Side)

Power plants typically output voltage at 10–20 kV. For long-distance transmission, step-up transformers raise the voltage to 110 kV, 220 kV, or even 500 kV and above. The higher the voltage, the lower the line losses — this is a fundamental principle of power engineering.

2. Step-Down Stage (Transmission → Distribution)

When high-voltage power reaches suburban substations, step-down transformers reduce it in stages: 220 kV → 110 kV → 35 kV → 10 kV. Each voltage level corresponds to different transformer equipment.

3. Terminal Distribution (Distribution → End User)

Finally, distribution transformers step down 10 kV to the 380V/220V we use daily. A single 2,500 kVA distribution transformer can meet the electricity needs of approximately 200 households.

💡 Key Figure: In China, the power system of a city with one million residents operates over 3,000 transformers of various types.
