Dry-Type Distribution Transformer | XIAOPAI Power Equipment
A dry-type distribution transformer uses air as the cooling and insulating medium instead of oil. There is no combustible liquid, no oil containment, and no risk of leakage into the ground. That single difference is why dry-type units are specified for indoor substations, commercial buildings, hospitals, tunnels and industrial plants where fire safety and ventilation rule out oil.

Typical capacity range: Distribution class, commonly 100 kVA to 2500 kVA

Dry-type costs more than an equivalent oil unit, and it is the right choice when the installation is indoor, occupied, or fire-regulated. Insurance classification, ventilation limits and the absence of an oil pit usually decide the matter before electrical parameters do.

Q1: Is a dry-type transformer completely fire-proof?
A1: No transformer is fire-proof, but dry-type carries fire-behaviour classifications F0 to F2 under IEC 60076-11 and contains no combustible liquid. This is why it is accepted indoors and in occupied buildings where oil units are not.
Q2: Can a dry-type unit be installed outdoors?
A2: Yes with a suitable enclosure, but it is not the default. Outdoor duty needs an enclosure rated for the environment, and most outdoor distribution uses oil-immersed because it is more economical at the same rating.
Q3: What capacity limit should I plan around?
A3: Dry-type is mainstream up to about 2500 kVA and 35 kV. Larger and higher-voltage designs exist but become a niche choice. Above that range, oil-immersed is the practical answer.
